The Renovation of the Marion Street Building |
|
|
Demolition Phase On Saturday, July 19, 1998, a group of Marion Street members gathered to begin the demolition/construction phase of the latest renovation of our building. The Marion Street congregation is blessed with a wealth of talent, much of it in the handyman category. What may have been lacking in experience for some of the participants was compensated for by an abundance of enthusiasm! During the course of the day, drastic changes were made in the appearance of the interior of the building. An old annex on the southeast corner of the building, formerly used as a classroom, was gutted in readiness for total demolition by contractors. This annex was replaced by a two-story structure which now houses an entrance vestibule and stairwells.
Little is known of the origin of this particular part of the structure. It probably was added sometime after the building was reconfigured for use as a movie theater, but the brick quality and construction is of much lower standards than the rest of the the theater renovation.
The two front classrooms were demolished since stairwells will be constructed in their place. As is the case during demolition, all appeared to be total chaos for a while, but eventually order returned as debris was cleared.
There just isn't a very neat way of removing drywall.......
It is hard to believe that this classroom was occupied by preschoolers just a few days prior to this photo!
Where once classrooms occupied the front half of the building, a gaping hole in the first floor ceiling revealed the upstairs space that became the new assembly area. This space will received stairwells for access to the second floor.
The classroom annex on the southeast corner of the building yielded to the demolition contractor.
Just a few weeks before this photo was shot, this area was classrooms and an entrance foyer. The slab was removed so new flooring could be constructed to support the stairwells and front facade.
